Dopod 838 Pro in HK

damn. I just came back from CSL hoping to buy the Dopod 838 Pro and the guy in front of me took the last one! The next batch won't arrive until 3 days later. The HK$6188 price is very tempting...

WHAT! The 838 Pro is officially out in HK?! Is that $6188 special CSL-subscriber only price?

The official price is HK$6180. CSL has been advertising it for the last two days already. The rest of the other Providers will be available next week.

Chung Yuen Electronics is selling for $5980 from what I was told.

Oh, might I also add that I went to several Smartone shops and none of the people know or ever heard of a 838 Pro. Smartone always reminds me of Fortress where their salesperson never keep up with the news. They always have a blank stare on their faces when asked of not-yet-but-soon-to-be-available products

Very true - the phone service providers are no better than Fortress staff when it comes to product knowledge. I usually shop around different branches of Fortress, Broadway, Chung Yuen, Gome etc until I find a salesperson willing to help and in the know.

That 838 Pro price of 5388 with a monthly 138 for 60MB looks very attractive!

$5388? Smuggled goods?

I just came back from APM just now. A lot stores including Broadway and GHome already selling it -- Chinese version only though. I want English version however. It would appear I will have to place an order at my service provider, Smartone, for it as existing members will most likely get a small discount...at least $500 off.

Note: CSL is selling it for $43xx if you join their service plans. Maybe I'll do that if Smartone cannot provide a reasonable discount...

PS. I physcially tried it out. The feel was very good. I think I will get it for sure.

Hmm yes that does sound rather attractive!  ($5388 is from CSL for monthly plan of $138)

I'll check Smartone too and see what they can offer.

Moved message here:

Actually, the 838 Pro is not that much thicker than my O2 Mini....and I just bought it!! Yah!

Nothing to write home about. I bought it from Times Square Broadway for HK$6180. It's the last of the two English versions available this week. They still have a few more Chinese versions though. Too bad no accompanying freebie MicroSD cards. I guess I will have to buy one later - Kingston 1GB 10MB/s MicroSD was selling for $245 at WanChai Computer Center.

Wow!  :thumbsup  Great stuff!!  You can't imagine how envious I am of you right now!!  heh.  1010 couldn't tell me how long it would take for an English version to arrive this evening.  They gave the impression I was going to have to wait for a very, very long time.

Yes, same applied to me too. I asked when and they said they don't know. I also asked if it comes with the "1010" logo on the phone even if I do not join their plans and they said their phones have to come with the logo. I said screw that!

I also when to WCCC and the big phone store at the top of the second floor stairs was the only one that sells English version. Initially I asked how much and they said HK$6180. I said I will come in 5 minutes. I came back in 5 minutes (went elsewhere to buy PC games, not went to compare prices) and they instantly raised their prices to $6580. I said screw that too!

btw, I also called Smartone and they cannot tell me if they will ever sell the 838 Pro anytime in the near future. I guess they were promoting something else.

Are you with SmarTone? If so - Are you able to access their 3G content with the 838 Pro?
